Rock and roll started like any other musical type before it, all experimentation. By the 1950's, jazz morphed itself into "swing" which was most dominant for that time. "Blues" had morphed into "rhythm and blues", or R&B, but it was still going strong in the black communities. these styles all came together and rock and roll was born.
Even though New Orleans wasn't the birth place of rock and roll, the sounds from Memphis floated down the river. The musicians of New Orleans liked this new kind of music and began to incorporate the sounds into their own shows. After WWII, the style of "rhythm and blues" and "rock and roll" took over. Radio and recording studios were as important to musicians as garage bands or playing after a Negro ball game.
Dave Bartholomew was a prominent musician of the second half of the 20th century. His partnership with Fats Domino produced some of his greatest successes.
