Current Music in New Orleans
Jazz
Today, New Orleans is famous for its upbeat jazz. "Jazz, being an improvised, freedom-loving music, naturally continued to evolve" into what you hear today.(Ramsey, 2018) Jazz is hard to define because it contains many subgenres. Jazz music is dominated by the saxophone and trumpet, and these days rarely has a vocalist or sheet music. Jazz continues to be the number 1 genre in New Orleans and can be heard on the streets throughout the city.
There are multiple jazz clubs that you can visit. Jazz is constantly changing and will forever evolve. Jazz can be heard throughout the city every day of the week - in the French Quarter, the Marigny, the Treme, uptown on Oak Street and on St. Claude Avenue. There is truly something for every ear, ranging from traditional jazz to acid jazz. Acid jazz, or known as club jazz, is mixture of elements of jazz, soul, funk, and disco. "Acts that are classified as acid jazz are often referred to as jazz-funk, neo soul, or jazz rap." (National Museum of American History, 2016)

Blues
Another very popular genre in New Orleans is blues. Blues originated in the Deep South of the United States by African-Americans from roots in African musical traditions, work songs and spirituals. New Orleans has its own subgenre of blues music known as Louisiana blues that is strongly influences by jazz and Caribbean influences. Louisiana blues contains piano, saxophone, and guitar or bass. While jazz is upbeat, "Louisiana blues is generally cheerful with a laidback tempo and complex rhythms." (Team, M. U., 2017) The vocals in Louisiana range from crooning to gospel shouting, but sound soulful, raw, passionate and vulnerable at the same time. Blues continues to be extremely popular in New Orleans.
Blues is often characterized by its lyrics, bass-lines, and instrumentation. In the early traditional blues, the verses consisted of a single line repeated four times. Now, it follows a standard AAB pattern: a line sung over the four first bars, repetition over the next four and a longer concluding line over the last bars. It is characterized by the call-and-response pattern, blues scale, and specific chord progressions.
